Gum Disease and role of Hygienists

Maintaining healthy gums is important for retaining healthy teeth for life.

The condition of your gums impacts on the health of your body and, today, gum disease is linked to an increased risk of numerous conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and fertility issues for women and even premature births. Infections from infected dead teeth, gum disease and impacted wisdom teeth can have a profound effect on our immune system increasing systemic inflammation in our bodies leading to higher risk of chronic disease.

Gum care is often more than simply brushing and flossing twice a day and having regular visits to your dentist. We also recognise that factors such as stress, diet, lifestyle, quality of sleep, chronic illness, blood conditions such as anaemia and vitamin deficiencies, and medications can also influence the health of the gums. Gum disease can be controlled or slowed down by regular professional dental cleaning and scaling which remove the build-up of plaque and tartar.

We pride ourselves on the excellent work of our Hygienists in guiding good oral hygiene. Our Hygienists are pivotal in assisting our clients maintain good oral hygiene – often giving advice on brushing and flossing; and advice on improving diet and lifestyle.
