In the past, amalgam fillings, also called silver fillings, were placed because they were inexpensive, easy to place and durable. Although the name implies that the filling is made of silver, the main substance (50%) is organic Mercury. Other components are silver (35%), tin, copper and zinc.
Meanwhile, the extreme toxicity of Mercury is well documented. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin, second only to Plutonium in terms of toxicity. There is no known safe level of mercury exposure. Mercury from amalgam fillings has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, infertility, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, among other diseases.
But what surprises most people is that the most significant exposure to this Mercury is when the Dentist cuts your old fillings out with a drill.
For this reason, I have prioritised the safety and wellbeing of our patients, staff and the environment. As a result, as the first Australian Dentist, I have received the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) Certification from the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology).
