Let’s face it, as long there’s no obvious pain or oral health problem, most people don’t think much about their jaw alignment. However, a jaw misalignment is more common than most people realise.
For starters, your teeth and jaw are working as a unit. The front teeth are used for cutting food and canines for tearing food. The function of premolars is to create the transition between the tearing function of the canines and the grinding function of the molars. The molars, which are the large, flat teeth at the back of your mouth, are used primarily to grind food during chewing.
If the jaw is properly aligned, the whole system works very well. However, in case of any misalignment of your jaw, your teeth are exposed to uneven wear and stress and with time chewing will get more difficult and even painful.
How do you know if you have a potential jaw misalignment? Here are some signs to look for:
- accidental biting of your tongue or cheek
- trouble chewing due to pain or stiff jaw
- excessive mouth breathing, even when the nose is clear
- trouble with speech because of pain or stiffness of the jaw
- ongoing headaches or facial pain
- uneven tooth wear
If you have at least one of these issues, it’s best to book with us as soon as possible in order to deal with this problem as early as possible.
